I spent a semester abroad last spring in India, living in Kolkata (Calcutta) and loved it. I got to do a bit of traveling as well. It's a wonderful place to visit and i found the people to be warm and engaging. It can be stressful at times and is quite an adjustment, but is well worth it. There is still so much i want to see in India-it's a huge country and I can't wait to go back soon. Let me know if you want more info re: traveling in India. Hope you make it there soon!
Peace

I visited India in February of 2000 and had one of the most rewarding experiences of my life! It is a unique culture and there are so many things to experience if you alow yourself to be more than a tourist and immerse yourself in the culture. I spent some time in Bombay, Hyderabad (South India) and a small oceanside town of Bapatla on the western shore of the Indian Ocean. People are very friendly for the most part and are excited to see foriegners in their country. I loved the experience and I would love to return to India for an extended period of time if possible! I have reccomended going to several people and further reccomend it to you! Hopefully you will decide to go! If you want more info feel free to contact me! Smile

I just got back from a trip to india for the month of January. We started in Chennai/Madras (Five Rajas and Shore Temple, IIT-Madras, Church of St. Thomas, Fort George?, National Museum), traveled to Bangalore(industry, National Park-tigers, sun bears, elephants), Pune(college stay), Bombay (sightseeing, India Gate, markets), Aurungabad (Daulatabad Fort; Ellora/Ajanta Caves), and then stayed in Delhi(embassy, Republic Day Parade, forts, crafts) with a short trip to Jaipur ("pink palace", Jaipur Fort, markets) and Agra (Taj Mahal; Agra Fort).

The trip was pretty cool. We traveled the longer distances by overnight trains and got to see and stop in the countryside. I don't have another trip planned, but it would be nice to go again.. I enjoyed the food (quite savory...spicy), trying to get a decent price for rickshaws, and shopping in the malls, open markets, and random stores.
