What are you comments about the train passes in Europe? Any advice?

I have a question... If you take, let's say, the France'n'Italy Pass, does it means you can travel for 4 days either inside France or Italy, but that you have to pay extra if you want to go from France to Italy?\003\003

In other words, if you want to travel from one country to another without extra charges (except the 15$ per ticket), what pass do you have to choose? The EurailPass (or the EurailSelect Pass)?

Thx

Hello Vincent, this is how the rail passes work: First of all, it depends on which countries you would like to visit. If the only countries you would like to see are France & Italy then you can purchase a Europass which includes three main countries France Italy and Germany and you can add on countries for an extra fee. How long will you be in Europe? This will also determine the type of pass and price you will be paying. Remember, though if you buy a France n Italy pass and you happen to go through Switzerland or any other country while you are traveling between France and Italy, the conductor will try to collect more money from you. The best thing to do is purchase a Europass. It will save you money and give you the countries you want to visit also. Just remember that the pass is on a 24 hour clock. You can hop on and off as many times as you like within 24 hours and it counts as only one time on your rail pass. Lastly, the Eurail pass, for example 10 days is valid in 17 Western European countries although it costs a bit more. You can see all of those passes and the details on [link] If you need any further assistance, please let me know. I live in Germany and in the US so I'm pretty familiar with getting around the countries as inexpensively as possible Smile Take care, Jacqueline

Looking back and back again at the details of the Eurail passes, and the time we have to travel (at most 15 days), we will probably stick to France and visit Paris, Strasbourg, Nice (and we have to go to Beziers as well). Also, we tought about a daytrip to Brussels (from Paris). That would mean for us to get a Eurail Pass France with 5 days (or 4 without Brussels).

As for the cost, it would be something like 355$ CDN for the pass, 145$ CDN for the tickets fees, plus 20$ shipping. Grand total: 520$ CDN.

I also checked for a car. I would be between 600-700$ CDN, plus gas. Essentially, that would be about the same as taking the train, but with more assles, at least that what I think.

What do you think of that?

Thx!

Vincent

Hi Vincent, Well, I think the best pass for you would be the Eurail Selectpass. You can select the 10 day pass/3 countries Italy, France and Benelux. The price is $375 per person for a youthpass (second class) under age 26, $580 per person for an adult pass (first class) age 26 or older, and $490 per person adult pass (first class) of there are two people traveling together through the whole trip it is a Eurailselect saver pass. As you can see, lots of details, but the most important thing would be to decide on how many days you would like to travel. Try to route your trip starting in Italy, then to France, then Belgium. Make sure your route does not take you into other countries than what is listed on your pass. Also, most importantly, please purchase the rail protection plan. If you do not, and you lose your rail pass you will not be refunded anything at all and your pass will not be replaced. The insurance is $14 per person. It pretty cheap and it will protect you throughout your trip. If you need anything else please let me know. If you don't have your ticket already I can give you the name of my travel agent so she can get you a good price. Take care, Jacqueline
