Hi, I have a question regarding airfare. I lived in Switzerland last year for school, and will be moving back in December. I would really like to purchase airfare now while it is cheap, but is it possible to get a return fare for Next August? It won't allow me to search for it because it is too far out. I would just buy it and push the return trip home back while I am over there, but it would incure a fee of $275 to do this under the terms and conditions so I am wondering how to go about this.
I want to leave around Dec. 31 and return in August.
Thanks for your help! |

| You might want to try and call the airline that you are interested in flying on. |

| Nope, airfares are only quoted up to something like 350 days- you will need to wait until mid august for that fare to be posted. Calling the airline wont help- theyll say the same thing. |

I currently have a budget of around $3,000 and plan on staying either at hostels or really cheap and budget hotels. I still haven't made any booking since I'm still not exactly sure of my plans yet, though I know I better do it fast and soon.
-Dates of travel, Around late September 2008
-City or cities of flights, Los Angeles to London Heathrow, then Fiumicino Airport, Rome back to LA
-Countries you wish to see, England, France, and Italy (open to Munich, Germany as well for Oktoberfest if feasible)
-Travel between cities by train
-Absolute cities/countries you wish to see, London, Paris, Florence, and Rome
-Days you wish to spend at each destination 3-5 nights
Just so you know, I've actually already made a preliminary itinerary, shall post it here for you or anyone to critique (to save you all the hard work)?
Thanks so much, I greatly appreciate your help! |

| Stanstead is the closest airport, but flights to/from the US are limited (it's mostly short-haul to the continent). Best bet is to fly into Heathrow or Gatwick (will require crossing London) or fly on a European carrier via their hubs elsewhere (i.e., through Germany on Lufthansa, or Scandinavia on SAS), depending on where you are in the US. |

| Yes I agree, Gatwick may be your best bet. It is connected to Waterloo by train- so at most you would just have one connection via a train to your final destination. A bus is an option as well from downtown London. |

thanks
I know this is an itinerary question forum but what could you tell me about the winter time in UK. I'm moving from Georgia, USA and this will be my second time out the country when I move to Thurrock in about two months. i'm really concern about driving in the snow and how I'm going to adjust to the cold weatehr. i can't begin to imagine how this is going to be. In my 32 yrs of living it has probably snowed twice in GA.
i just have alot of concerns, trying to get my drivers lic, finding a place to stay, but i 'm excited about the move and i'm just trying to keep an open mind about everything. |

Ok, hears the deal- it does NOT snow in that part of the UK. It may a little- but no more than a dusting so dont worry about that. Just bring some warmer clothes.
As far as driving- its up to you on getting the license. I am not even sure if they will allow you to get a British license anyways- A much easier option is to look into getting an international drivers license. They cost like 20 bucks at AAA- and as far as I know are good for the duration of your stay in England unless you plan to try to gain perm. residency as an English citizen. In fact, technically they don't even require that. I have driven rental cars with my US state drivers license- just make sure it doesn't expire before you come back to the us. I assume you plan to lease a car while there.
Trick is- dont worry- things will work themselves out if your planning ahead.
Hope that helps- feel free to ask away as needed and if we dont know the answer- we will get a contact number to get you the answer! |

Thanks
I've been doing some research and I found out that I can drive off my USA license for 12 months in the UK and then I will have to go take the test for their license, but after tweleve months of driving I should be ready. |
