I'm trying to find a credit card that won't charge me an arm/leg/soul every time I withdraw money from an ATM overseas. I've been looking for one for months. My card had a low rate until I actually went out of the country and used it. About a month after my trip to Prague, the company set me a thick little booklet of new rules and fees and informed me that they were changing some of the terms of my account (translation: they'd found a new way to get money out of me). Today I got an ad in the mail for a card that charges a $10 minimum fee for DOMESTIC ATM use. TEN BUCKS! Does anyone know of a card that doesn't suck for travellers? It's so much easier to withdraw money from an ATM with a credit card than it is to take cash to an exchange counter and hope they're not ripping you off.

Hey A, All companies want to make money off you, if possible dont use any. When I was in Japan I was able to charge things on my amex, amex did the rates for me at that time, and billed me the exact ammount in USD. I would use cash on an emergency, and try to charge everything I can. I've herd mastercard is better for travelers, that was the main focus of MC that divided it from Visa before, but now it is about the same. Remember they make money off you when you use your credit card, hoping you'll go minimum payment each month, so I would not advise to add even more fees on top of it. Or go ATM, I think if you travel to china for example they have HSBC, and citibank in england and france.

American Express offers awesome exchange rates compared to the other cards, the only thing about AMEX is that not everywhere accepts them.

Just FYI capital one cards DO NOT charge the fee for purchases out of the country like every other card does.
