| Me and my house mate are traveling to England for 12 days in late March. We know we are going to spend 3 to 4 days in southhampton, and a few days in london, but are not too sure what else to do. The main idea is to take it day by day. We are not too sure how much to carry on the money side for a 12 day trip. youth hostels are fine with us, but do we need to book them in advanced, or generaly can we find a place with an opening? Our main goal is to just see places, and enjoy local pubs. do you have any idea on how much we should be looking at for 12 days, and have any ideas for some cheap and interesting things to do while there? We have been looking at heading into Northern England at some point depending on how much it would cost. Thanks for any advise |

Regarding hostels, I would book the hostel in the first city you plan to stay at now. Then, book the hostel for any other cities you plan to travel to the day before you travel to that city.
25-30 GBP/day (not including hostels) should be good for most cities, while 50 GBP/day will be good for London. I would add on more if you plan to do a lot of drinking.
If you are going to be on the south coast, you could visit Brighton. It is better in the summer but there are a lot of pubs, clubs, and bars in the city. You could visit Cambridge, which is only and hour north of London. It is a nice town with pubs and of course, Cambridge University. If you are heading north, you could visit Newcastle or even head into Scotland and visit Edinburgh, which is a great city with tons of college students. With the time available to you, I would not plan on going too far north unless you are going to be in London for 2-3 days. |

Oxford is also nice, and about two hours from London. If you want to head north, try York and the surroundings, and also the Lake District is really lovely.
Don't know how much you are going to move around, but the train can get expensive, though busses aren't always a deal either.
The hostels in London are the ones to book ahead due to demand. _________________ In three words I can sum up everything I've learned about life: It goes on.
