Regarding railpasses, your best bet is to get one of the Swiss Passes. It can be used on trains, buses, boats, and for public transportation in many cities in Switzerland. You can also use it for a 50% discount on cog wheel trains and it will allow you free access to 400+ museums.
I was just in Switzerland in October and Interlaken is a great place to see the Alps. Jungfraujoch, the heightest train station in Europe, is located there. If you plan to go there, I would recommend that you stay at the Rugenpark B&B.
Geneva is not very tourist i.e. there is not much to do there. I would only visit Geneva for 2 days max. When I was there, I made day trips to Lausanne and Montreux. They are about an hour away from Geneva. Lausanne is a nice city and home to the IOC and Olympic musuem. Montreux is famous for the Chateau de Chillon. It is a small town and there is not much to see there except the Chateau.
Lucerne is a tourist town, but you can see most of it in one day. It is only an hour outside of Zurich. There are other things to do around Lucerne, like the mountains. Zurich is a big city and there is much to do there. The old town is cool. You can go up to Uteliburg and get a panoramic view of Zurich. I did not have time to visit Bern or Basle, but I heard both of the cities are cool. I recommend that buy Lonely Planet Switzerland. It was very helpful on my trip. |
