I went on a trip to East Africa (Kenya & Tanzania) last summer with a friend of mine and had a great trip. I liked Kenya more. Nairobi was kewl – though it can be kinda shady at night (stay away from the market after sundown; my friend got a necklace ripped off his neck right in the market). Hotels and food are on the cheap and you can even make plans on where to stay when you get there. I stayed at the Boulevard Hotel, it wasn’t anything too special but it left me money to go on safari.

Speaking of safari – the best place is the Masai Mara game park (about 2-3 hours from Nairobi). Lots of animals, especially sweet if you can be there during wildebeest migration (I wasn’t, but if I ever go back I’ll time it right). There are some really nice hotels on the game park, but they can be wicked expensive. I did a camping thing (you stay outside of some the expensive hotels, then go there in the AM to shower and stuff).

If you got time – they got great beaches in Mombasa (cuz Kenya is on the Indian Ocean). Folks are kewl and you can do it on the cheap.

So if you want a really kewl trip check it out! Very Happy

Hello there,

Thanks for posting - I have always wanted to go to Kenya. How much time do you need to really "explore" it? Also, besides from the incident at the market, did you feel safe most of the time?

My friend and I have been trying to fly to Kenya cost-efficiently this summer, but due to the flight ban placed by Pres. Bush, it is hard to find tickets under $2000 (they used to be under $900 for a good seat). Does anyone have any suggestions for cheap tickets? (websites or airlines that may not be connected to the US ones?) $1500 max for roundtrip? Student Universe doesn't have much whenever we check and we've been checking for two years. Very Happy Kenya is safe to visit--safest in East Africa, so there shouldn't be a flight ban...

My friend is a citizen there and has not been home yet since he started as a freshman here (we're seniors now). If anyone can help us or "hook us up"--that would be greatly appreciated! We don't care about hotels, rentals and such, for we'll be staying with his family.

Thanks,
~~Lena

Hey!
I'm really thrilled to see all the interest in Kenya!!! I'm from Kenya and I think it's an amazing place that everyone should visit before s/he dies, but I'm biased Embarassed so it's always good to see enthusiasm from other people.
About cheap tickets, I went home last summer and the best deal I got was about $1600, but my cousins normally go home around this time of the year (very off-peak and warmer weather than July/August) and they get their tickets for about $1100! It's a crappy time with school schedules and everything, but not many people travel at the beginning of the year, so if you can arange your schedule, try and travel between Feb and April and book early.
Also, has excellent prices all the time.
Safari Njema! Very Happy

Asante sana, thanks, for the links, I'll check the rest out soon. [link] has prices under $1500--so that's great. Unfortunately we can't leave until after we graduate Confused So we'll go during the hot/dry season. If there's any more links, feel free to post! Very Happy

Anonymous Proxy ? What's that ? In most cases, general purposes proxy servers ( from proxy list ) do inform the target server about the address of the computer that made the request, transmitting the IP-address and other personal information to the website. But among different kinds of proxy servers ( from proxy list ) there are so called anonymous proxy servers ( from proxy list ) that can hide your IP address, which is a unique ID assigned to identify your location, as well as many other personal information, thereby saving you from vulnerabilities related to it.: [link]

You might try getting a cheap ticket to London, then something out of there. That seems to work for many European destinations, and could for Africa as well. I'd love to see Africa, hope all of you have good trips.

You cant go wrong by traveling to Kenya. Once you've landed, clear out of Nairobi and head to the coast. North Coast is the party, South Coast is a castaway's paradise! Read about it here: [link] You can find more info here: [link]

I totally agree about Kenya, I spent 2 months there on my own after my Junior year in high school, it was awsome, I would love to go back. I would suggest going to the Massai Mara and staying in a tented camp, they can be expensive unless you can get a in-country rate. Also if you go to Mombasa and visit the resorts to the south. the sunrise over the Indian Ocean is great. Nairobi can have a great nitelife if you know where to go, I would suggest K2 and Carnivore for clubs. Also if you have the chance, this part can be difficult, go to the Nguruman area, about 2 hours south of Nairobi and you can visit the largest Manyatta in Kenya, a Manyatta is the villages that the Maasai tribes live in.

I'm going to Kenya in August 1st to do some volunteer work working at an orphange. I'll be there for a month. I am having the same problem with the price of airfare. I found some cheap for $2200 but nothing cheaper. I'm leaving fro LAX into NBO. This was a last minute thing. I'll be living with a Kenyan family, so i'm excited.

But yes, I need to find a cheap ticket :lol
