|
|
Hi all,
I'll be going to Honolulu in a couple weeks, and was wondering if anyone knows about a decent place to rent a car. I don't need anything fancy, of course, just something to get around. Also, mopeds aren't really an option as I'll have a couple passengers. I am 18, so that would probably open up a few options (as opposed to being 16, where I'd probably be out of luck)
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
spongebue
Edit: Also, as a last resort, companies that allow under-21 additional drivers at little or no extra cost would be ok as well. I'll be with some relatives that are over 25, but would like a car while I'm there if possible.
One more edit: I guess a Jeep Wrangler (or similar) would be awesome if possible... of course, beggars can't be choosers |

Are you from Europe by any chance? (I had assumed so by this question).
All the same- there are only two places by state law that allow persons under 21 to rent a car in the US- that is New York and Michigan. Both charge very high fees to do so as well (up to 50 bucks a day!).
Hawaii is no exception. If you are under 21, you are out of luck, sorry no car.
It sucks, but even persons 21-25 usually are charged an extra fee around 15-30 bucks a day!
The one exception is if you are with the military or on corportate travel and your company sponsors you- then they allow 18-25 to drive a car because your company pays extra insurance for it.
For others between 21-24: Enterprise is usually the best bet, they only charge 15 bucks at most locations for the under age fee. |

Nah, I'm actually from Minnesota (though I'm going to school in Western Wisconsin). I knew about the extra charges and stuff, but had no idea that the 21 minimum was a state law thing.
Too bad, too... I'm a pretty good driver, clean record. Just not trusted because of my age, I guess Oh well, not much I can really do about that. |

Yep it does suck, something you will need to wait until 21. I would assume it would be ok at 18 too, but only in 2 states. (Even then like I said stupid to do- 50 bucks a day extra is garbage). 16 for sure no, 18 I see no issues! Oh well, a product of the US- cant even drink til 21. I assumed you were in Europe because some countries allow 16 there to rent cars and drink too- were soo far behind!
Also- as an fyi to others too, SUV's arent usually rented to anyone other then 25+. 21-24 is usually limited to just cars.
Hawaii has a great bus system if its reallly needed, though sounds like you have transport taken care of.
You may ask your relatives to burrow there car if they live there, but if there going with you then you are subject to them renting and taking you places. |

I may end up doing that, though I wouldn't want to mess up their car if something were to happen (I wouldd get insurance if I did a rental, just to be sure). My relatives actually live out there, since my cousin is in the Navy.
Part of it is that I have an older Jeep, which I love, and I am also very fond of the Wranglers. Last time I was in Hawaii, I really wanted to drive my car out there and to have a Wrangler out there just seemed so awesome. |
