PS1 is an interactive art museum with unusual oddities and new artists al the time...in july and august every weekend in summer there are block parties where you'll see some interesting things. my last trip there i met Moby, swam naked in a kiddie pool, saw a 300 lb naked old man playing flute, climbed a wall made out of old kegs, played volleyball on a man made beach and witnessed an art exhibit from japan that reminded me of a bad mushroom trip...
another weird spot in texas:
if you are traveling cross country, if you go along the top of the panhandle in texas ( i forget which highway) there is another art-type installation piece off the side of the road that is very apparent with a row of race cars shoved into the ground... i wish i took a picture of it, if anyone has a pic let me know!!!
